Established in 2001, the Georgia Cancer Coalition united state government, doctors, hospitals, public health agencies, advocacy and survivor groups, universities, non-profit and faith-based organizations, as well as the business community, around a single mission: To reduce the number of cancer-related deaths in Georgia. The GCC is funded primarily through the tobacco settlement agreement.
As a result of the above organization, the state was mobilized in to nine coalitions under a planning grant. Plans were submitted and in 2003 the East Georgia Cancer Coalition (EGCC) became the first designated center of excellence. Since then the organization has evolved into a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. One of our principal goals is to educate high risk populations on cancer awareness, prevention and early detection strategies. Therefore, the EGCC creates programs that seeks to inform communities on these issues. Our coalition is anchored by two major Georgia universities - UGA in Athens and MCG in Augusta.
