Faith-Based Community
One of the EGCC's principal goals is to educate high-risk
populations on cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection strategies, and
therefore the EGCC creates programs that seek to inform communities on these
issues. For example, the EGCC regularly attends events such as town hall
meetings and health fairs where discussions relating to cancer can be held.
Currently, the EGCC is funding a faith-based initiative in which the EGCC works
closely with African American religious organizations. With the support of these
religious and community leaders, the EGCC holds regular forms that discuss
cancer awareness, education, prevention, and screening guidelines in African
American churches in the region. The purpose of this program is to increase
awareness in high risk communities on the necessity of cancer knowledge through
educational presentations with the supports of the pastors.
The EGCC has
also administered breast screening programs utilizing mammography. By
collaborating with churches, local health departments, and hospitals, we have
been able to provide numerous breast cancer screenings. For these events, the
EGCC provides referrals to the Health Department to ensure follow-up
services.
As a recipient of the Care Giver Education Grant, the
EGCC has funded the creation of a web-based kiosk containing cancer and health
information. In addition to health and cancer-related information, the kiosks
feature links to agencies and health providers in order to serve as a resource
tool for its users. This effort also includes a distance learning certification
program for pharmacists so that they can become certified in cancer care. In
order to implement this program, the EGCC is collaborating with The University of Georgia (UGA) College of Pharmacy and the UGA College of Public Health. The kiosks
were placed in CVS and Kroger Pharmacies in Athens, Georgia fo this
pilot project.
Partnering with the East Central and Northeast Health Districts, we have also begun distributing prostate & colorectal informational posters throughout our 29 county region, as well as men's and women's health check-up cards.
Additionally, the EGCC recently funded an extensive
demographic study on our 29 county region. This study analyzed cancer statistics
from a socio-economic perspective and will serve as an invaluable tool for
future efforts that will address the specific needs for each county we seek to
serve. |
