The East Georgia Cancer Coalition (EGCC) is a 29 county diverse region
We have in our region over 1 million citizens with a distinctive mix of rural/urban, black/white, rich/poor, educated/uneducated, young/old with a growing Hispanic population
Our region consists of Urban, Suburban and Rural Areas with non-diversified economic structure with historic dependence on agricultural economy, high intergenerational poverty and high illiteracy.
Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in GA. Our 29 county region represents close to 13% of the total cancer deaths, however, our region only accounts for 9.4% of the state's total population.
Cancer outreach activities and programs must involve the entire community: government, schools, the faith community, the private sector, and the media.
Flexibility and innovative planning must be an integral part of the region's health care initiatives
The EGCC strives to provide culturally-appropriate information regarding prevention, detection, & treatment. We provide links to our state organization (Georgia Core) who has an updated website of all of the clinical trials in the state. We assist our citizens with the information for referrals to be shared with their physicians. Information related to state of the art services and treatment are provided upon request.
Bench research is currently done through funding from the GCC. The EGCC participates in population based studies with the School of Public Health at UGA.
